Latinos Promoting Good Health-Latinos Promoviendo la Buena Salud (LPGH) is a collaborative effort that began in 2010, between representatives from community based and for-profit organizations, federal, state and local health and safety agencies, and local university medicine and pharmacy students with the main goal to organize and convene family health and safety fairs throughout the state of Washington that strive to improve the health of communities residing in Washington state.

Health and Safety Fairs are an innovative way to meet the unique health care needs of families while providing a safe environment in order to minimize the barriers preventing families from accessing health care and other community services. During each Health and Safety Fair community members receive free health screenings, information about preventive care and safety, access to community programs, health insurance options, worker’s rights, injury prevention and other resources/services available in the community where they live.

Organizations represented on the statewide committee include: Molina Healthcare of Washington, Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Latino Center for Health, Medical Teams International, Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, Consulate of Mexico, New York Life, WA Department of Labor & Industries, Community Health Worker Coalition for Migrants & Refugees (CHWCMR), Al-Shifa Clinic, UW School of Pharmacy, UW School of Medicine, Seattle University School Nurses Association, Actitud Latina and the Western Washington National Association of Hispanic Nurses (WWNAHN).

Within each local community, other community partners join the Latinos Promoting Good Health-Latinos Promoviendo la Buena Salud committee members in planning each local community health & safety fair. Examples of past local community partners in the different areas include SOAR, SeaMar, Public Health – Seattle & King County (PHSKC), International Community Health Services (ICHS), DSHS, King County Local Hazardous Waste, YWCA, MultiCare, UW Valley Medical Center, Mason General Hospital, Breast, Cervical & Colon Health Program (BCCHP), Goodwill, Familias Unidas, South Everett Neighborhood Center, Jubilee REACH, Stevenson Elementary School, City of Bellevue, Youth Eastside Services (YES), St. Edwards Church, St. Mary’s Church, St. Luke’s Church, Centro de Amistad Cristiano, St. Louise Church, St. Elizabeth’s Church, Christ the King Church, Latino Education Training Institute (LETI), Renton Housing Authority, Iglesia Centro de Vida, Iglesia Roca Fuerte, Sikh Centre of Seattle, Conexion Contigo, Walgreen’s, Skagit Valley College and YMCA.

Each Health and Safety Fair has the minimum of free blood pressure, BMI (body mass index), glucose and cholesterol screenings. Glucose and cholesterol screenings are limited depending on funding.

Some Health and Safety Fairs have added screenings such as pap, mammogram, dental, vision, child developmental screenings, osteoporosis (bone density) and HIV testing.

Each Health and Safety Fair provides an opportunity for those who are uninsured to obtain free or low cost health insurance if they are eligible (through the WA Healthplanfinder).

During the fall, free flu shots are made available at each event.

At some of the events free Child ID kits are made available to children that attend the event.
